I’m not quite sure how accurate the G00-Net description is, but I found a 1969 HiAce Truck.
The more I look at this style of truck, the more I like it. It’s pretty much all that I would need in a truck on a regular basis. I also think the proportions look great; a short single cab with a long bed.
This one has the 1.3L 3P, producing 65 hp and 75 ft-lbs of torque. It does only weigh ~2,500 lbs (this example, probably less)
You could get later models with the 16-R. I wonder if a 22R-E would fit in here?
The interior needs some work, and it’s a bit pricey at over $5,000. It could probably also use some POR-15.
Find it

Cool. Great truck! Years ago I had a Hiace Commuter bus that had a Toyota Dyna engine fitted, think it was a 22R. Not an easy swap but it fit. Did go better but wasn’t worth the hassle.

That’s a good perspective on the performance of these trucks (and everything in general). A marginal improvement isn’t worth the effort of doing said improvement most of the time.
A lot of people think that everything needs to be fast and powerful, but is that really the case?

That’d be a great rig with a 22re! You may even see Expressway speeds.
I wouldn’t even think about painting it. I like it just the way it is.

I kind of doubt you would want to reach expressway speeds in this thing anyway!
I believe POR-15 comes in clear, which should be enough to stop rust from continuing to form without changing the look too much.

I ride 3 wheelers in Hare Scrambles. I’d have no issue with that on the E-way if it could hit 65-70. It can’t be much worse than a Transit in a crosswind.
I always thought POR was UV unstable.

The Dodge A100 is probably the most similar American thing:
But for some reason Americans just don’t like/buy cab-over designs.

That’s probably true... now I’m curious to try...
POR-15 is UV sensitive without the top coat. The top coat comes in clear as well, but I have no idea how much both would change the character of the finish.

Any clear will darken the Rust. I bet the POR clear would work just as well as any though if it’s going onto an unprepared surface.

I actually started looking into this, and it seems like the consensus on various forums is to just leave the rust alone as long as everything is solid (only surface rust). The patina just doesn’t look right with any treatment on it.

The first generation Ford Econoline, too.
I don’t know why Americans don’t like cab-over designs. They seem more useful and space efficient for any given size.

Thanks. You sum that up well.
Yeah if you were talking too an 18 year old me I’d say ‘Yes! Faster everything!’ But 42 year old me disagrees. Especially in a COE vehicle, you don’t want to be a crumple zone.
